The Fibre Optic Embedded Geotextile or FOEG is a matting that has three fibre stands running up the length. Delivered in rolls like carpet it is laid out and covered with data points installed. The idea is to assist engineers in recording the settle and movement of the motorway during its construction. By providing rich data the engineers are able to determine with more accuracy the stage at which the motorway is settling and able to plan and allocate resource accordingly.
Atlas is completing the civil works for the FOEG installation whilst CNC Alliance will manage the testing and connections and a representative from France (where the product is manufactured) will oversee these activities. It is the first time this product has been used in New Zealand and the first time on a motorway. There has been careful planning put in by CNC Alliance and especially in the way it is installed to maintain structural integrity. The job will take around 12 months to install and is part of the first stage of Motorway construction. The first stage is starting March 2017.
